GAPIMNY’s 25th Anniversary – Co-Founder Don Kao (Rough Cut)

GAPIMNY’s 25th Anniversary – Co-Founder Don Kao (Rough Cut):

The Gay Asian and Pacific islander Men of New York (GAPIMNY) is one of the oldest queer API organizations in the US. With roots in the first Lesbian and Gay March and the People of Color Conference in 1979, Don Kao recounts his journey to create a space for LGBTQ Asians, to bring visibility and form mutual support networks for the community. Almost 40 years later, queer API groups continue to provide safe meeting spaces and advocate for their constituents and in Washington D.C., I’ve been very fortunate to participate in such a group for gay Asian men, where I’ve been able to build meaningful friendships and connect with other queer APIs from all over the world.
